The Olympic Riviera in Greece is not a resort but a continuous 70 km long stretch of coastline that lies at the foot of Mount Olympus, the mythological home of the Gods. For those wishing to scale Mount Olympus, almost all climbing routes begin to the southwest of the town of Litochoro which is filled with pretty tavernas and cafes. By way of contrast, the modern town of Katerini is packed during summer when Greek and international visitors, drawn by the region's wealth of culture and benign climate, book their holiday houses, holiday rentals and holiday apartments months in advance.
