Turgutreis Beach
A slim stretch of dark, golden sand that skirts the second largest town on the Bodrum peninsula, the beaches here span a glorious 19 kilometers. Turgutreis is a charming, characterful place; a bustling harbour town named after a respected 16th century admiral. The sea is shallow and calm here, so this resort is popular with families, although there is plenty of nightlife for those who want to put on their dancing shoes. The beach sits in full view of the Greek island of Kos, which is just 6 or so kilometers across the Mediterranean/Aegean Sea. But in terms of culture and atmosphere, they are poles apart. There are some 14 Turkish islands in total nearby, some of which can also be glimpsed from the shore. Behind the beach and the town, the scenery is pretty; with rugged mountains peppered with olive trees that spill down to the town, and whitewashed houses on the hillside.
Things to do on or near the beach
The beach is lined by a strip of restaurants, and the unwritten rule is that you buy your drinks and snacks from the establishment behind your sunlounger. The town has plenty more good restaurants and bars. The area is well-known for windsurfing, and it is also possible to arrange waterskiing, parasailing and dinghy hire nearby. There is a 1931 lighthouse built by the French a little further up the coast, and a windsurfing school not far from there. Turgetreis’ colourful history means there are plenty of tombs, fountains and churches, all with their own stories to tell. Today, the town is a bustling harbour, with a food market and bazaar, especially on Saturdays. There’s a new marina which is worth a visit, and you could even do a little island hopping – to Kos, Rhodes, or one of the other Turkish Islands.
